The Environment
A dynamic shoreline - beautiful, fragile, and tide-led.
A Coastline Shaped by Tides
The Intertidal route follows Jersey's eastern coastline. This dynamic, living environment is shaped by one of the largest tidal ranges in Europe.
Twice each day, vast areas of reef and shoreline are exposed and submerged, creating rich habitats that support marine life, coastal birds and fragile ecosystems.
Why This Coast Matters
This stretch of coast is ecologically important not just for Jersey but for the wider Channel Islands.
Along the route you'll find:- Intertidal reefs and rock pools
- Shallow bays and sandy flats
- Seagrass and seaweed habitats
- Feeding and nursery areas for fish and birds
These environments are productive, beautiful — and easily damaged if not treated with care.
Water Quality & Coastal Health
Bathing water quality around Jersey is closely monitored, particularly in popular coastal areas.
Conditions can vary depending on tides, rainfall and seasonal factors. We encourage everyone using the coast for running, swimming or recreation to stay informed.
